Navigation Course

It is no fun at all being lost

Particularly if you are lost by chance and not by design. Even if we want to get "lost" by design, chances are we mean it in a philosophical sense and not in the literal sense. We head out into the wilderness for a good time, prepared to be out there for a certain number of hours or maybe days. But if we get lost the hours can turn into days and the days into weeks. It is of absolute importance not to get lost.

In order not to get lost, a few simple things need to be kept in mind.

You have to know where you are.
You need to where you are going.
You need to know how to get to where you want to go.

In a nutshell, this is what navigation is all about. It sounds simple enough, but it is really amazing how easy it is to take leave of common sense when we are having a good time. Chasing a butterfly through the meadow and soon you lose track of the path. Talking among friends, taking photographs, you are possibly not paying much attention to the track ahead or indeed your back trail. And suddenly, you are lost and panic sets in double time.

One of the most important skills to learn before heading out into the wilderness is navigation.

You ought to know where you are and where you are headed. And in case you get lost or disoriented, with the knowledge of navigation you will be better able to find your way towards safety. Along with that comes the invaluable knowledge of cartography. You possibly do not want to create fancy maps of the city, but knowing the basics of cartography, you will be able to draw out a scale map of your surroundings. With this map you will be secure in the knowledge that you will not get lost as long as you stay within the map area, and it gives you a lot more freedom to explore the area.

This Course teaches you the basics of how to tell directions, how to find your coordinates, and how to find your way forward towards safety and rescue. This is conducted in the outdoors and you will end up drawing a map of the Course geography.
