There are some very simple and sensible things each one of us can do to reduce our individual carbon footprints. The list below is by no means exhaustive, but it is indicative. Think for yourself and see how much better you can do to make this a better world.
• Walk or take the bicycle instead of the car
• Car pool
• Use public transportation
• If you have to have a vehicle, use a low carbon one or an electric one
• Charge your electric car using solar power
• Say NO to SUVs and other gas guzzlers
• Drive responsibly - speeding and acceleration reduce mileage and increase CO2 emission
• Keep your car tyres properly inflated
• Maintain your vehicle - have it serviced regularly
• Avoid traffic, whenever possible
• Make fewer trips
• Avoid flying if possible or fly less frequently
• Reduce flying vacations
• Make use of video conferencing facilities to reduce flying
• Travel economy class - it is similar to car pooling
• Run your home on solar power
• Try reduce the number of electrical gadgets at home
• Check if household gadgets are energy efficient
• Hang clothes to dry instead of drying them in the dryer
• Better still, wash your clothes the old fashioned way and gift away the washing machine
• Put in enough water in the kettle as you need and no more
• Turn off lights when not in use
• Install a urinal at home and save water by not flushing every time someone urinates
• Forget the 'exotic' counter on food counters - they have been transported thus adding to carbon footprint
• Eat locally grown fruits and vegetables
• Recycle grey water in your home
• Wash your car less and more efficiently
• Use a mug and bucket to bathe instead of taking a shower
• Turn off the tap when brushing or shaving
• Hand wash your dishes instead of using a dishwasher
• Don't print something you do not really need to
• Use the blank side of a used sheet of paper to print on
• Open the windows instead of switching on the air conditioning
• Packaging is a major source of CO2 emission - avoid packaging as far as possible
• Run in the park instead of on a treadmill
• Follow the principle of REFUSE | REDUCE | REUSE | RECYCLE
